Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Did you know that about 80% of people who have sleep apnea don't even know it !

This is a serious disease that affects all ages including children. Snoring is one of the signs of sleep apnea but not all people that snore have sleep apnea.

What is  sleep apnea?

When the tongue falls back it can block the airway leading to loss of oxygen to the brain which is not a good thing. A soft palate that is enlarged or large uvula can cause this too.  This can happen many times a night without you sometimes even knowing it. This can lead to tiredness during the day,  poor work performance, headaches, stress, falling asleep while driving. depression, and heart disease.

The diagnosis of sleep apnea is made by a sleep apnea specialist  M.D. with a sleep study.

There are treatments for sleep apnea and snoring. Local dentist, Daniel Huigens DDS in La Verne, CA  treats patients that suffer from this with oral appliance therapy. Another treatment is the use of a CPAP machine. Dr. Huigens works with a local sleep medicine M.D. that we can refer you to.

Many patients can't tolerate a CPAP machine and oral appliance therapy is a good alternate. Even when patients have a CPAP and oral appliance is good to have because of electrical outages or vacations where you can't always have a CPAP.

Take the sleep apnea screening test.
